Slipping Quietly Through the Night

Photos by Rick DoleThough they are not scheduled to participate in this year’s running of the Mobil 1 12 Hours of Sebring, Audi Sport quietly pulled into Sebring this week to do some testing on the legendary air field. Of course, Sports Car Insider had people on the ground.

Rick Dole sent over a few spy shots of the updated Audi R15 Plus and the Audi R8 GT3 slated to run compete in the FIA European GT3 Championship. The R8 is also rumored to be coming to ALMS GTC in 2011.

Driving the R15 is former Corvette Racing pilot Marcel  Fässler. And legendary Audi factory shoe, Frank Biela was shaking down the R8.

Four different teams will use the Audi R8 LMS during the 24-hour race at Nürburgring. ABT Sportsline, and Phoenix Racing  with two cars each, will be racing in the GT3 class during the event.

“R15 plus” was to make its racing debut at the 1000-kilometer race at Spa-Francorchamps. The Belgian endurance classic continues to be on Audi Sport Team Joest’s race schedule as the final dress rehearsal for Le Mans. However, to complement these plans, Audi Sport also wants to use the season opener of the 2010 Le Mans Series (LMS) on the high-speed circuit at Le Castellet to test the “R15 plus” in racing conditions.

For Le Mans, Audi has signed three new drivers, the Swiss Marcel Fässler, German André Lotterer and Frenchman Benoît Treluyer, who will be sharing the cockpit of one of three Audi R15 TDI cars in the twice-around-the-clock enduro.
