Porsche and Ferrari have gained most of the GT2 publicity and subsequent class wins and championship over the past two years with Ferrari taking manufacturer honors in 2007 and Porsche in 2008.

But this year, they will have to fend off the return of BMW with Rahal Letterman Racing as well as the many other Marques within the class.

In addition, Corvette Racing will make a mid-season entry into the class after their championship success over the past decade in the GT1 class.

This season, seven Marques will be represented within the GT2 class including: BMW, Chevrolet, Dodge, Ferrari, Ford, Panoz and Porsche.

The class is highlighted by the defending champions, Flying Lizard Motorsports, who has entered a two-car team for 2009.

Defending driver champion, Jörg Bergmeister will be joined in the cockpit by American Porsche Factory driver, Patrick Long. Entering their sixth year of ALMS competition, the team has never finished outside the top three in the team and driver championships.

Once again they will be tested by the Ferrari’s of Risi Competizione with former driver champion Jaime Melo and his new co-driver Pierre Kaffer. After a dominating 2007 season in which Risi Competizione won eight races and the championship, the 2008 ALMS season did not go as expected. They did however still win two races and the 24 Hours of Le Mans.

Farnbacher Loles Racing made their first foray into ALMS competition in 2008. The team made steady progress all season long while gaining confidence which eventually led them to their first career American Le Mans Series victory at Road America.

BMW and Rahal Letterman Racing both return to ALMS action for 2009 as Rahal Letterman Racing will compete with a pair of BMW M3’s. BMW was very successful in ALMS producing 15 wins (nine in GT2 and six in LMP1) between 1999 and 2001.

VICI Racing returns for their sophomore season of ALMS competition with high hopes. The multinational team’s name may be relatively new to fans of ALMS but they boast over 20 years of experience in the sportscar racing world.

In addition to the teams mentioned above, other challengers in the GT2 class are Primetime Race Group (Dodge Viper); Team Falken Tire (Porsche); Panoz Team PTG (Panoz Esperante GTLM); LG Motorsports (Chevrolet Corvette GT2) and Robertson Racing (Ford GT-R).
