Objects of Desire ~ SCi Plays Santa's Helper

If there’s a common thread that runs among car guys (and girls) it’s the appreciation of cool gadgets and things. Personally, I’ve always had a bullseye on my back when it comes to the latest gadgetry and an even bigger target when comes to luxury goods. Put them both together… all bets are off.

So, I thought I’d put together a little idea list for the holidays. Not that I’m sending it to Santa… but should he happening to drop by and have the urge to leave anyone of these items under my tree, I’d be one happy lensman. So.. with out any further babbling, here’s your inaugural selection of SCi Christmas Gift Ideas.

Ferrari 458 Italia at 1/4 Scale

This first item is from the Amalgam Collection. These magnificent design presentation models of the Ferrari 458 Italia at 1/4 scale are around 1.2 metres (4 feet) long. The first three models produced were displayed in the lounge area at the ‘World Premiere’ launch of the car at Fiorano. The exterior details are very finely modeled with the windows shown in black gloss. The model is available in Rosso Corsa and Giallo Modena Tristrato and is limited to just 50 pieces in total. This baby takes up a fair chunk of real-estate… so make sure you clear enough space under the tree.

SHANLING TUBE MC-30 MUSIC CENTER

You will fall in love with this fantastically beautiful sounding music center.

The iPod phenomena continues to make its presence felt far and wide. Whereas audiophiles traditionally have sought out the biggest and the most powerful gear in any given segment, the iPodization of America has rallied the masses to shout out the mantra that “small is beautiful”.

The Shanling MC-30 Music Center exquisitely integrates the retro with the cutting edge. It’s a brushed aluminum CD player and tuner with 3 watts per channel, single ended tube amplifier section, fully remote controlled with a built in iPod docking station.

The clean design is also a reflection of innovative engineering; eagle eyes will note that the top caps of the front pair of footers are in fact, an input selector and a volume control. Shanling’s trademark blue-lighting encircles the transparent CD transport lid. A gem of a conversation piece that cuts across all generational segments.

Features

  • Combining high quality CD player, tuner, dedicated iPOD input and tube power amplifier in one chassis.
  • Philips VAM-12 pick-up mechanism coupled with CD-7II servo system for low jitter tracking
  • D/A conversion is accomplished by Burr-Brown PCM1738 DAC chip
  • High-quality FM/AM tuning system
  • 2x6P1 single-ended tube output stage
  • Mini multi-functional lever, concealed input selector and volume control

Omas Maserati LE

A Maserati in your breast pocket.. how can you go wrong? A partnership between Bologna and Modena has resulted in the development of an exclusive range of co-branded writing instruments.

With a limited production of 1,914 examples, 1,200 of which are fountain pens and 714 roller-ball, Omas for Maserati celebrates the centenary of the founding of the Modenese company but, above all, the style of its one-off models.

Produced in sterling silver, the Omas for Maserati pens perfectly combine Omas’ verve for craftsmanship with Maserati’s intrinsic elegance. The grille, one of Maserati’s classic symbols, is captured in the aerodynamic pen top. This draws its inspiration from the GranTurismo, the latest in the long line of innovative Maserati creations. The pen’s tapered, shiny clip could have been designed in a wind tunnel and the vents on the sides of the top sculpted from ice.

The harmonious shape is a true celebration of Italian creativity.

Leica X1

There’s one thing that all Leica cameras share: each is born of the desire to develop cameras that deliver the best picture quality in the world.

The Leica X1 is the direct beneficiary of 100-plus years of German engineering experience and it delivers the best picture quality in its class - in the proud Leica tradition. This elegant camera features a professional CMOS image sensor that’s as large as those in high-quality SLRs. Combined with an outstanding Leica lens it captures images of unmatched brilliance. Any way you look at it, the Leica X1 is a winner: It’s conveniently compact, its controls are intuitive, and it offers a full range of sophisticated automatic functions. A real Leica “Made in Germany”.

Countless iconic images in the history of photography were shot with a fixed focal length of 35 mm. This focal length is considered to be a classic for reportage photography, and has lost none of its timeless charisma today. The Leica Elmarit 24 mm f/2.8 ASPH. is a true Leica lens with terrific optical performance. When seen in terms of 35-mm film format, it has precisely this legendary focal length of 35 mm.

The LEICA X1 offers versatile photography in terms of her numerous automatic functions and manual individual settings. The photographer can choose the easy way and let the camera take the lead over exposure or shutter settings in the automatic mode or switch over to manual controls by using the wheels on top of the camera. Thus the X1 allows the photographer to keep full control for individual creative art work and at the same time provides the automatic mode to ensure the capability for quick response.

The autofocus of the X1 provides fast focusing competence and enables photographers to react in an instant. At the same time, the autofocus mode can be modified to suit the situation. Photographers have a choice of 1 or 11 AF segments and an additional high-speed mode for each. When taking photos of people, face-recognition mode allows complete concentration on the composition and framing of the picture.
