TEAM NEWS: Keen on mend as Farnbacher Loles takes third at Daytona

Photo by John Thawley The Farnbacher Loles Racing team traveled back to Daytona for the Brumos Porsche 250 as team driver Leh Keen continues to recover from a heavy crash in practice at Mid-Ohio. Keen's #85 Shoes For Crews/Recaro Porsche was destroyed as he was unable to avoid contact with another car blocking the track during the morning warm-up before the race. The heavy impact broke Leh's collarbone and sent him to the hospital. The entire team wishes him a speedy recovery and his great attitude and driving skill will be missed. As Leh is out for at least three races, his teammate Dominick Farnbacher will share driving duties with American driver Ian Baas. Baas last drove for the team at Indianapolis in 2006 where he pulled off an exciting third place podium in the Porsche Super Cup race.

After leaving Mid-Ohio, the Farnbacher Loles crew worked round the clock getting a new car prepared in time for Daytona. As Ian drove the #85 to third place in qualifying, it was clear the effort paid off. Qualifying in the fifth spot was Bryce Miller in the #87 Marquis Jet/IPC/Paul Miller Porsche/Recaro Porsche 997 GT3. Coming into Daytona, Bryce and his teammate Dirk Werner have had a season-leading five podium finishes.

In the race, Ian and Bryce both had solid starts and kept in the thick of the battle through the early running. As has happened far too often this season, the #85 was soon out of the running. While heading through the bus stop chicane, Ian was hit in the rear by another car, breaking a wheel hub and ending his day. The crew looked on in disbelief as Ian was running solidly in third and matching the pace of the class leaders before the incident. Bryce meanwhile was driving a fantastic race. Starting in the fifth spot, he methodically worked his way up and moved into the third position. Bryce drove flawlessly and handed the car over to Dirk during a green flag stop to bring it home. The stop dropped the #85 to fifth, but Dirk kept the hammer down and like his teammate, moved into third place. As the race came to a close, Dirk set the race's fastest lap and brought the #87 home in third for the duo's sixth podium of the season.
