SCCA NEWS: Pobst Rebounds at Watkins Glen To Take First SPEED Touring Pole of 2007

Photo by John Thawley WATKINS GLEN, N.Y. (June 8, 2007) – Randy Pobst, of Gainesville, Ga., rebounded from a disappointing Lime Rock weekend over Memorial Day Weekend to take the pole position for Saturday’s SCCA SPEED World Challenge Touring Car Round Four race, part of the Sahlen’s Six Hours of the Glen Weekend at Watkins Glen International. James Sofronas, of Newport Beach, Calif., will start second in the first race of a doubleheader weekend.

Driving the No. 73 Mazdaspeed Motorsports Development Mazda 6, Pobst ran a fastest time of 2:05.459 (97.561 mph) around the 3.4-mile, 11-turn road course—breaking the old track record, set in the series’ last appearance in 1998, by nearly seven seconds.

“It’s good to be back [on the pole] for Tri-Point Motorsports and my car chief,” Pobst said. “It’s really satisfying to get my Mazda 6 up to speed. I love Watkins Glen and we flew. In fact, I am staying with my old friend Peter Schwartzott. Peter and I won four 24-hour races in a row here at Watkins Glen. And, every time I come out of the toe of the boot, memories just fill my head. I put together a good lap with a lot of help from [teammate] Jeff Altenburg. He towed me two-thirds the way down the track. I passed him coming out of the toe of the boot and just rammed it home. I really got to thank my personal sponsors Team Janika Racing, Weathertech, and APR Tuning for supporting me.”

Pobst finished second to Altenburg in the opening two rounds before a frustrating weekend at Lime Rock, where he qualified 12th and finished 11th.

A driver on a roll is Sofronas. After finishing a career-best second at Lime Rock, Sofronas qualified his No. 29 Global Motorsports Group/Techmark BMW 325Ci second—equaling his best effort—with a fast time of 2:05.970 (97.166 mph).

Pierre Kleinubing qualified his No. 1 Acura Certified Pre-Owned/RealTime Racing Acura TSX third, with a best time of 2:06.130 (97.042 mph), followed by teammates Peter Cunningham (No. 42 Acura Certified Pre-Owned/RealTime Acura TSX) and Kuno Wittmer (No. 44 Acura Certified Pre-Owned/RealTime Acura RSX.

Charles Espenlaub (Mazda 6), Seth Thomas (BMW 325i), Michael Galati (Mazda 6), Altenburg (Mazda 6) and James Clay (BMW 325i) completed the top 10. Altenburg reportedly brushed the wall exiting turn 11 during the session.

Saturday’s race is scheduled to make its standing start at 6:30 p.m. (EDT) on Saturday. Sunday will feature Round Five of the series.

Both weekend races will be broadcast Saturday, June 30 on SPEED.
