TEAM NEWS: SMITH, SKEA, FRIEDMAN FINISH 10th in ROLEX GT SAHLEN’S SIX HOURS of THE GLEN

(June 15, 2007) –The driver team of Brian Smith, Derek Skea and Cory Friedman took the Kicker/Churchill Transport/Autometrics Motorsports Porsche to a 10th place finish after a tough start in the GrandAm Rolex GT Sahlen’s Six Hours of the Glen at Watkins Glen International Sunday.

It was the first time the driver combination of Brian Smith, a SPEED World Challenge series competitor, Derek Skea, a talented racer making his professional driving debut, and Cory Friedman, a regular competitor in GrandAm Rolex GT series, had competed together. It was also the first time Smith or Skea had driven a GrandAM Rolex Porsche.

Smith, Skea and Friedman drove impressively consistent, clean laps throughout the race, despite their limited experience together and in the series. Their smooth driving style allowed them to overcome an early two-lap deficit, occurring when the No. 14 Kicker/Churchill Transport/Autometrics Motorsports Porche was passed by the leader under caution. The Kicker/Churchill Transport/Autometrics Motorsports team was not allowed to make up the lap lost under caution. An unplanned pit stop for tires resulted in the loss of an additional lap. But the powerful Autometrics Motorsports Porche, the talented trio of drivers, good pit strategy and quick pit stops helped the team to overcome the early issues and post a solid 10th place finish.

“It was a tough race weekend,” Smith said. “We were working hard on eliminating the understeer during practice in the Kicker/Churchill Transport/Autometrics Motorsports Porsche only to find out prior to qualifying that a new differential we put in the car had a significantly different basis which changed the balance of the vehicle considerably. The crew made an educated guess at the setup for qualifying and Cory [Friedman] did a good job of getting a solid lap in to qualify 17th.”

Co-driver Skea said the team was able to race well despite an imperfect setup, and felt confident he made his first venture into pro-racing with a team capable of a top-10 finish.

“The setup was not perfect for the race but it was the best it had been all weekend and allowed us to race well,” Skea said. “We showed we belonged with a top-10 in the first effort and the podium is not far behind. Thanks to Churchill Transport Group and Kicker for making this possible.”

The Autometrics Motorsports team is currently working on car upgrades and plans to test in preparation for several more races this year including the series’ last stop at Miller Motorsports Park in September.
