SCCA NEWS: Galati Leads SPEED GT Practice at Lowe’s Motor Speedway

Photo by John Thawley CONCORD, N.C. (May 24, 2007) – Five-time World Challenge Champion Michael Galati, of Olmstead, Ohio, led practice at Lowe’s Motor Speedway for Round Four of the SCCA Pro Racing SPEED World Challenge GT Championship, part of NASCAR Nextel Cup’s CTC Pole Night. Teammate Randy Pobst, of Gainesville, Ga., was second fastest, followed by current point leader Eric Curran, of East Hampton, Mass.

Driving the No. 23 K-PAX Racing LLC/Jim Haughey Porsche 911 GT3, Galati was third in the first practice session at the 1.5-mile modified oval, but found nearly 0.4-second in the second session, to top the practice times with a 49.666 (107.276 mph).

“We improved the brakes and worked on the handling since we were here for the [March] test,” Galati said. “I think we’re still lacking a little straight-line speed. The guys have done a great job though. The braking areas are where you make up all your time.”

Teammate to Galati, Pobst jumped to second fastest on the day with one last hot lap as the checkered flag fell on the second practice session. The No. 22 K-PAX Racing LLC/Jim Haughey Porsche 911 GT3 pilot put in a time of 49.753 (107.089 mph).

Current point leader and driver of the No. 30 Whelen Engineering Chevrolet Corvette, Curran gained one spot between the morning and afternoon sessions, finishing the morning third fastest with a time of 49.783 (107.024 mph).

Andy Pilgrim, of Boca Raton, Fla., was the fastest of the Cadillacs in his No. 8 XM/Mobil 1/Motorola/Bose Cadillac CTS-V. A first session time of 49.823 (106.938 mph) was good enough for fourth on the time sheets.

Winner last weekend at Miller Motorsports Park, Tommy Archer, of Duluth, Minn., completed the top five. The No. 5 MOPAR/Autohaus Motorsport Dodge Viper clocked in a 49.954 (106.658 mph).

Driving the No. 9 Kicker/Woodhouse Dodge Viper in his SCCA Pro Racing SPEED World Challenge debut, NASCAR Nextel Cup Star Kasey Kahne, of Enumclaw, Wash., showed improvement in the morning practice, picking up two spots and more than 0.7-second in the second session to end practice in 13th.
