TEAM NEWS: Lizards Qualify 3rd and 7th in GT2 for Utah Grand Prix

Photo by John Thawley May 18, 2007 -- Tooele, Utah -- Flying Lizard finished 3rd and 7th in GT2 in today's qualifying session for Saturday's Utah Grand Prix at Miller Motorsports Park. Joerg brought the No. 45 into third, the highest qualifying Porsche in GT2, and Lonnie Pechnik qualified the No. 44 seventh in the 12-car GT2 field.

During the 20-minute qualifying session, which was five minutes shorter than normal, the No. 61 Ferrari stopped on course halfway through the session. The resulting red flag reduced the amount of time for all of the GT cars as they attempted to put their fastest laps on the track.

"Joerg's times right before qualifying were fast enough to have a shot at the pole," said engineer Stefan Pfeiffer. "We made some changes right before qualifying that didn't quite go our way, so we didn't see the times in qualifying that we had in the earlier session. And of course the short session didn't help things. But we're still pleased with the starting position and are looking forward to a very competitive race."

Team manager Eric Ingraham added, "The red flag came at exactly the wrong time. The No. 44 Porsche was on the second of two timed laps, which would have been Lonnie's fastest lap, when the track went red. We made the call to go out again with what time was left, but the sticker effect had worn off the tires by that time and we weren't able to improve our position."

"Tire management will be a key issue for all the cars tomorrow," said chief strategist Thomas Blam. "With so many long, sweeping corners at this track, the car is nearly continuously loaded which puts a lot of wear on the tires. It's also clear that the dust and wind are going to be tough for the drivers. There's a lot of run off, but any car going off track creates a lot of dust and debris that the others have to contend with."

In the team's No. 45 Porsche, Johannes van Overbeek and Joerg Bergmeister will continue the battle for the ALMS GT2 drivers' championship title. The two are currently second behind the Risi No. 62 Ferrari's Salo and Melo. Seth Neiman and Lonnie Pechnik will team up for this race in the team's No. 44 Porsche.

The 2 hour and 45 minute race will begin at 5:05 p.m. Mountain Time, Saturday, May 19, 2007 and will be televised on CBS Sports tape delayed on Sunday May 20 from 1 to 3 p.m. Eastern Time. In Europe, MotorsTV will broadcast the race on Sunday May 20 from 18:30 - 21:30 in the UK and 19:30-22:30 (CET -Paris). Flying Lizard will broadcast their radio communications live during the race.
