SCCA NEWS: Tri-Point Leads the Way in Utah Morning Practice

Photo by John Thawley TOOELE, Utah (May 17, 2007) – Picking up where they left off at Sebring, Tri-Point teammates Randy Pobst of Gainesville, Ga., and Jeff Altenburg, of Ellicott City, Md., topped the time sheets in morning practice at Miller Motorsports Park for Round Two of the SCCA Pro Racing SPEED World Challenge Championship, part of the Utah Grand Prix. Seth Thomas, of Cumming, Ga., was third fastest in the session.

Driving the No. 73 and No. 72 Mazdaspeed Motorsports Development Mazda 6s, Altenburg and Pobst continued the momentum from their Sebring one-two finish at Miller Motorsports Park in morning practice. Pobst’s time of 3:10.930 (84.583 mph) around the 4.486-mile, 24-turn road course was the fastest in the first of two practice sessions. Sebring winner Altenburg was not far behind, with a 3:11.079 (84.583 mph).

“Craig Nagler is a genius,” Pobst said. “We made some discoveries at Sebring and you can see it in the results. The car has never handled better. It’s fantastic and I love driving it.”

Thomas got the BimmerWorld team’s weekend off to a promising start, turning a 3:11.501 (84.331 mph) on his first hot lap. The time stuck for the remainder of the session and put the No. 37 BimmerWorld BMW 325i third-fastest on the time sheets.

Celebrating his 25th birthday today, Chip Herr, of Lititz, Penn., was fourth-quick in his No. 17 Cuturbus Audi/STaSIS/Clear Capital Audi A4, with a time of 3:12.327 (83.969 mph).

Reining SCCA SPEED Touring Car Champion Pierre Klienubing completed the top five. Turning a lap of 3:12.388 (83.942 mph) in his No. 1 Acura Certified Pre-Owned/RealTime Acura TSX.

The second SCCA SPEED Touring Car practice session will take place this afternoon at 4:30 p.m. (MDT). Qualifying is schedule to take place Friday, May 18, at 11:30 a.m. (MDT).
