TEAM NEWS: Lowe's Fernandez Racing Finishes Eighth in Houston

Photo by John Thawley It was not the weekend that Lowe's Fernandez Racing had hoped for heading into its debut on the streets of Houston in the Lone Star Grand Prix. After battling the handling of the #15 Lowe's Acura Lola over the ultra bumpy temporary circuit in practice, Adrian Fernandez and Luis Diaz had their hands full during the 2 hour and 45-minute race this evening trying to manage an overall lack of grip.

Diaz started the race in seventh position overall, fifth in the LMP2 class, but fell behind the LMP2 car of Chris Dyson at the start. Diaz lost a lot of time behind the #20 machine trying to make a clean pass while compensating for an ill-handling car and eventually went a lap down to the frontrunners. Fernandez took over the controls on Lap 62 with one hour and 37 minutes remaining in the race. He ended the night eighth overall and seventh in class.

Lowe's Fernandez Racing is looking to return to form when the ALMS series resumes its racing action on May 19 for the Utah Grand Prix at the state-of-the-art Miller Motorsports Park facility in Salt Lake City. Both Fernandez and Diaz have experience on the 4.486-mile permanent road course.

Adrian Fernandez, #15 Lowe's Acura Lola:

"It was a race of survival for us. We just haven't been able to find a good setup over the bumps. Luis and I tried to do the most we could, but it was very difficult. We had no grip. We couldn't brake. There was no traction -- no grip on the front. We couldn't challenge anyone. The way the car acts is over the edge. On tracks that are smooth like Long Beach and St. Petersburg, it seemed we were pretty strong. Obviously there are only a few tracks like this circuit but to fight for the championship, you need to be good at every one. We have a lot of work to do to understand this chassis better on these types of circuits because we are really out of the window. The whole car just has no potential on these types of tracks at the moment."

Luis Diaz, #15 Lowe's Acura Lola:

"I struggled at the first part of the race with [Chris] Dyson which cost us quite a bit of time. I didn't feel as competitive as Long Beach. There was no grip and the car was bouncing a lot. We were sliding all the time and it was hard to control the car. It's a shame because we have been working very hard. This is a great team and we will be back. I am very optimistic that we will have a good show in the next race."
