TEAM NEWS: Gigliotti, Peterson and Drissi qualify LGM Corvettes 4th, 16th and 31st in unusual Long Beach Qualifying session

Photo by John Thawley Long Beach, California (April 15th 2007): Lou Gigliotti, of Dallas Texas, unhappy with his first qualifying attempt used a late session hot lap in his LG Pro Long Tube Headers Chevy Corvette C6 to rally back to 4th position for Round 2 of the SCCA Pro Racing’s SPEED World Challenge GT Championship Series here on the street course in Long Beach California.

The session began under very cool conditions prompting SCCA, in response to requests from teams and drivers, to begin the session under yellow to allow the drivers to get extra heat into their cars and tires. Unfortunately the plan backfired as the leaders caught the end of the field as they were trying to make their first qualifying runs.

The good news was that the cool conditions kept their Toyo tires cool enough to allow the drivers to get in more hot laps than usual. Many drivers including Gigliotti and Andy Pilgrim, who qualified 2nd, were able to cool their tires in the pits and improve their times late in the session which is unusual in the World Challenge Series.

“The session was stared with one lap under a double yellow so the lead cars were catching the back of the field when it was time to start our hot lap and that caused havoc and really messed everything up,” Gigliotti said of the beginning of the session. “I got a decent first lap but I was caught up in traffic so I came into the pits and waited to try again later in the session.”

Try again Gigliotti did as on the 7th lap of the session he improved his time to 1:25.535 which moved him up onto the second row for the race which is scheduled to begin today at 4:00 PM Pacific Time. Ron Fellows qualified on the pole in record breaking fashion with a best lap of 1:25.086. Lou Gigliotti and all of the top 10 qualifiers broke the existing qualifying record for Long Beach.

Mechanical issues hurt the qualifying efforts of both Tomy Drissi and Doug Peterson today as Drissi lost the differential in his Next – The Movie Chevy Corvette in the opening laps and Peterson, having lost the second practice session due to a power steering problem, used the qualifying session for more of a practice and setup session in his UrbanAssaultMovie.com Chevy Corvette.

“When you drive over the curbing on courses like this you get better lap times but if you are under power when you do that you can break the rear-end and that was what Tomy did this morning,” Gigliotti said. “It shouldn’t be an issue for the race but Tomy will be starting 31st. Tomy should win the Sunoco Hard Charger Award (the award given the driver who advances the most positions during the course of the race) if he doesn’t crash!”

“I know Doug is very disappointed with where he qualified but he should move up and finish well,” Gigliotti said of his teammate Peterson who recorded his fastest lap on his 9th and final lap on the track at 1:27.371. “He finished the session turning in lap times he would have done yesterday so I think he will be even faster during the race!”

“We have a couple of Cadillacs on the front row and a pair of Corvettes on the second row with a Viper and a pair of Porsches right behind us so it ought to be a great race today,” Gigliotti said in conclusion.

The LG Motorsports Chevy Corvette C-6s of Lou Gigliotti, Tomy Drissi and Doug Peterson will compete in Round Two of the 2007 SCCA Pro Racing SPEED World Challenge GT Championship Series at 4:00 PM Pacific Time on Sunday April 15th.

The race can be seen on SPEED TV on tape delay on April 21st 2007 at 3:00 PM Eastern Time.
